Pan's Labyrinth

Wow.

I've just been blown away by this film.

I could mention the beautiful direction, the amazing set design and effects, the superb acting (Sergi Lopez to start with, but they are all excellent).

And the story.... It's such a fantastic piece of writing that works on so may levels and can be interpreted slightly differently by different people. The way the fist act that set the plot in motion is replacing an eye in a statue and then a insect (or a fairy; or maybe whatever ytou want it to be) comes out from the heart. The way the fantasy sections mirror and foreshadow events in the 'real' world (the key, they eating of the food that wakens the beast and makes it see what is happening). The fact that the true horror lies in the war. The lightness of touch that gets it's point made without forcing it down your throat. Fairy tales as an escape, the labyrinth as the difficult route to adulthood, self sacrifice, the futility and emptiness of not questioning your actions, I could go on, there is so much in this film.

And the ending... A perfect last line.

Best film I have seen for a very, very long time.
